Weather, festivals and crowd levels change dramatically across the UK calendar. Here is exactly when to go, depending on what you want from your trip.

Spring (March – May): Blossoms and Fewer Crowds

Spring is one of the most underrated times to visit the UK. Daffodils and cherry blossoms fill the parks, days lengthen noticeably, and tourist numbers stay well below the summer peak. Late March can still be chilly with occasional frost, but by May, temperatures often reach a comfortable 15–18°C. This is a superb window for city breaks in London, Edinburgh or Bath, where you can explore major sights without the queues that build up from June onward.

Summer (June – August): Peak Season, Best Weather Odds

Summer offers the UK's longest days and warmest average temperatures, often between 18–24°C, with occasional heatwaves. It is also peak season: expect higher hotel prices, busier attractions, and the need to book popular sites like the Tower of London or Edinburgh Castle well in advance. Summer is the best time for the Scottish Highlands and Cornwall, when long daylight hours (up to 17 hours in the far north) make hiking and coastal exploring especially rewarding.

Autumn (September – November): Colour and Calm

September remains mild and is often called a "second summer" by locals, while October and November bring spectacular autumn foliage across the Lake District, Cotswolds and Cairngorms. Crowds thin out significantly after the school summer holidays end in early September, making this a favourite season among our returning travellers. Pack layers, as temperatures can swing from a crisp 6°C morning to a mild 16°C afternoon.

Winter (December – February): Festive Cities, Quiet Countryside

Winter transforms London, York and Edinburgh with Christmas markets, festive lights and Hogmanay celebrations. Days are short (sunset by 4pm in December) and temperatures hover around 2–8°C, with snow more common in Scotland and northern England than in the south. Our Recommendation

For the best overall balance of weather, cost and crowds, we recommend late May, June or September. If budget is your priority, aim for January–March. If festive atmosphere matters most, December is unbeatable — just book accommodation early.
